Rapid City, SD, Tuesday, 31 July

DMV troubles, Chuckwagon dinner-show --- and Obidiah makes new friends. We began our second day in SD innocently enough by going to a nearby DMV to get our SD drivers’ license – which turned out to be a snap.  Attempting to register the RV, however, turned out to be anything but simple.  It seems SD requires the “unladen weight” (or “dry” weight), as opposed to the gross weight (GVWR) of the motorhome.  Without going into a frustrating tirade, let’s just say Lynette and I literally tore the RV apart looking for an “unladen weight” sticker inside and outside the motorhome.  We found all sorts of references to GVWR, but nothing that referenced the unladen or “dry” weight.  In the end, it took a call to Winnebago’s Tech Support.  After giving them the serial number of our unit, they then e-mailed us the unladen weight (which is a little over 22,000 lbs.).  A very frustrating afternoon -- so frustrating that we forego any plans to visit Mt Rushmore today, and instead decided to lay low for the afternoon (I took a nap!).  Anyway, the temperatures in the Rapid City area were near triple digits today with thunderstorms in the forecast, which finally came late this afternoon.  In the end, we made reservations for dinner/show literally right next door to our campground – something called the Fort Hays Chuckwagon Supper and Cowboy Music Show.  Turned out to be a good deal.  Very good BBQ beef dinner, followed by a live band that played everything from Willie Nelson to early rock-n-roll, with a couple comic acts thrown in (think Elvis impersonator).  All in all, good family fun, plus it took our minds off the day’s earlier frustration.  We also had time before the dinner/show to time to browse the Dances With Wolves film set and various Fort Hays period workshops: handmade knives, ropes, tin plates, etc.

Tomorrow’s plans include a visit to the Mt Rushmore Memorial and hopefully on Thursday a trip into Wyoming to see Devil’s Tower.  Anyone remember Close Encounters of the Third Kind? Yes, that tower.  Guess we’d best get to work on our mashed potato sculpture......

P.S.  Obidiah met a couple of characters outside one the Ft Hays Chuckwagon wild west buildings and asked to have a picture taken with his new-found friends.  Kinda cute aren’t they?
